Systems-Driven ARPG (In Development)

The Game

Starfall Kingdom is a systems-driven ARPG prototype exploring class identity, rhythmic combat systems, and procedural world architecture.

The project investigates how mechanical constraints, narrative identity, and player input rhythms can shape distinct playstyles. Combat systems are designed to reward mastery through timing, stance management, and deliberate decision-making rather than raw stat escalation.

Current development centers on the Veilwalker, a rhythm-based dual-stance class built around maintaining balance between opposing forces.

Primary Class Focus: Veilwalker

Class Fantasy & Identity

The Veilwalker exists between two opposing forces: Solar light and Umbral shadow. Rather than specializing in one extreme, the class draws strength from maintaining equilibrium between the two. Players alternate between Solar and Umbral stances while managing a Balance Meter that shifts with combat inputs. Mastery comes from maintaining controlled oscillation — building tension without allowing the system to collapse into instability.

The fantasy centers on precision, restraint, and rhythmic control, where power emerges from disciplined balance rather than excess.

Core Mechanical Pillars

Dual-Stance Combat Framework

The Veilwalker operates through two contrasting combat stances:

Solar Stance
Focused on offensive momentum and burst damage.

Umbral Stance
Designed for control, defense, and sustainability.

Switching between stances directly influences balance stability. Overcommitting to one side destabilizes the system, forcing players to correct their rhythm. This framework introduces a layer of tactical decision-making built on timing and flow.

Rhythm-Based Stability System

Combat inputs influence a dynamic Balance Meter that tracks the player’s alignment between Solar and Umbral forces. Alternating stance abilities stabilizes equilibrium, while repetitive inputs increase instability. When imbalance becomes extreme, volatile modifiers trigger — introducing both risk and opportunity.

This system encourages players to engage with rhythm and pacing rather than relying on cooldown cycling.

Combo & Expression Architecture

Abilities are designed around input sequencing and stance-dependent modifiers, allowing players to construct fluid combat chains. 

The system supports:

• Stance-dependent ability behavior
• Conditional environmental interactions
• Modular system hooks for future abilities

Rather than rewarding raw stat accumulation, the Veilwalker emphasizes mechanical fluency and player expression.

Broader Class Design Framework

Beyond the Veilwalker, the game features three classes built around distinct mechanical philosophies tied to celestial lore:

Hollow Warden
A defensive class built around memory echoes and stance stability.

Veilwalker
A rhythm-driven class balancing opposing forces.

Votary
A spellcasting class centered on attunement and environmental responsiveness.

Each class is defined by:

• unique input frameworks
• distinct resource mechanics
• mechanical constraints tied to narrative identity
• progression arcs that resolve thematic tension

Rather than differentiating classes through stat variation, I designed them around fundamentally different gameplay philosophies.

Combat & System Execution

The combat framework is currently being implemented with a focus on system clarity and extensibility.

Key systems in development include:

• Stance-switching combat logic
• Input sequencing and combo architecture
• Hidden progression scaling tied to player mastery
• Environmental interaction hooks
• Difficulty scaling through a WorldTier system

The goal is to create combat that reinforces class identity through mechanical behavior rather than isolated damage calculations.

Procedural & World Architecture

To support replayability while maintaining combat readability, I developed a procedural generation framework using Wave Function Collapse integrated with Unity Rule Tiles. 

The system defines biome constraints through:

• Adjacency rules
• Weighted encounter logic
• Shrine anchoring and landmark preservation
• Corruption density scaling
• Hidden WorldTier progression

This allows the world to evolve dynamically while preserving the structural clarity required for combat encounters.

Custom Environmental Systems

The project also includes several custom-built environmental systems designed to support traversal and environmental storytelling.

Current systems include:

• Polygon-based water volumes with dynamic surface simulation
• Manual mesh generation layered across parallax environments
• Collision integration through PolygonCollider2D
• Script-driven environmental hooks supporting combat and traversal

These systems prioritize performance, clarity, and gameplay readability.

Role & Scope

Starfall Kingdom is currently being developed as a solo project, where I lead all aspects of development including:

• Systems design
• Narrative architecture
• Class design
• Combat implementation
• Procedural generation
• Environmental programming
• Audio design and composition

The project functions as a design laboratory for exploring combat systems, class identity, and systemic world behavior.

Current Development Focus

Current development is focused on building a playable vertical slice centered on the Veilwalker combat loop.

Key areas of work include:

• Refining Veilwalker combat mechanics
• Expanding procedural encounter weighting
• Iterating WorldTier progression logic
• Building a combat + biome demonstration prototype

The project remains intentionally modular to allow core systems to be validated before expanding scope.
